8A-Solving the Problem
The opportunity I chose to discuss was the issue of cleanliness in the dormitories at the University of Florida. This problem is not due to the lack of cleaning, but the age of the buildings. A solution to this issue would be to renovate the old dorm buildings, but that is extremely expensive. So, the issue is getting the money to fund this project. My solution to this problem would be to start a series of fundraisers for dorm renovations. This would help raise money and also show the university faculty that this is an issue people are passionate about. It would raise awareness around campus and not only benefit students, but also the university. With newly renovated dorms it would mean more incoming students would want to live on campus, which would generate more revenue for the school. These renovations need to be done for the health and safety of its residents and in the end it will also benefit the school.

What kind of fundraising would you be doing? I am not too familiar with the cost of renovation, but I am sure that it can go into the millions. So I think first you much specify exactly what renovation you are talking about. Replacing furniture? Repainting walls? New appliances in kitchen? This will better give you an estimate of what type of fundraising you will need to solve these solutions.
ReplyDeleteHey Madelyn,
ReplyDeleteI agree that dorms in universities are the worst. They can get absolutely disgusting and no one every does anything about it. So i am a hundred percent for renovations. However the cost of renovations can be quite a bit. What is the fundraising going to be? Who exactly would be doing the fundraising? Also what parts of the dorm are first priority for changing? If you have a list of what renovations to do first it might make this plan way easier.
Hi Madelyn,
ReplyDeleteI agree in that a series of fundraisers would be a good solution for finding funding to renovate the dormitories. The University could even ask for donations from alumni to help fund the matter. I have heard many stories of people in my dorm being sick from mold build up so this opportunity is definitely relevant and ready to be taken care of.
Madelyn,
ReplyDeleteA fund raiser for the university dorms is a great idea! If the funds aren't coming directly out of University pockets then there is a higher chance of the dorms being updated in the near future. Students, staff and alumni could all show how much they care about the university living situations if they pitch in to this project.
Madelyn, I have never been inside of a dormitory building at the University of Florida, but I have no doubt they need a facelift. I remember once, when I was in high school, that a prominent midwestern university spent a considerable amount of money renovating a number of dorms to include higher end amenities, like hot tubs, in the dorm rooms to get more students to live on campus and more revenue for the university and from what I have heard, it went over extremely well.
