13A-Reading Reflection1

1.) I read the book Miracles Happen about Mary Kay Ash. I think what shocked me the most about her and her life was how much she struggled. I know the brand Mary Kay because I know my mom has used the products at some point, but I did not realize the history behind the company. I admired that no matter how bad the circumstances were Mary Kay did not give up her goals. It was upsetting to read about how she blamed herself after her first marriage ended, but she did come back from it and was successful. Mary Kay encountered many struggles and failures. She was married 3 times and had many issues in the work place because she was a woman and did not get promotions like her male coworkers did. She persevered and became successful because of how hard she worked for herself and her three children.
2.) Mary Kay showed many people that she was competent and able to care for herself. She was able to provide for herself and her children and became a successful business woman in the process.
3.) On page 53 in the book I was a little confused because she said, " For almost a year, I felt that I had failed as a woman, as a wife, and as a person." This confused me because she is such a strong independent woman and hearing that she felt this way surprised me.
4.) "How did you continue to preserver throughout your struggles?" "If you could go back in time is there anything you would change about your life?" These are the two questions I would ask Mary Kay.
5.) I think Mary Kay's definition of hard work would be someone who perseveres through the rough times and does not give up. If there are obstacles this person would find a way around them instead of giving up. I agree and think this is a great definition of hard work.

  1. Madelyn,
Overall great post highlighting Mary Kay's life and struggles.I read about Elon Musk, and he shared a lot of characteristics with Mary Kay. Not a lot of people believed in his ideas, but he kept on pushing. Elon did not want to take no for an answer, and went on anyway. Musk almost couldn't meet payroll, but his drive to succeed and persevere helped him get through. Overall, great job on this post!

  2. Hi Madelyn! I read this book as well and as I was reading your post, I found myself agreeing with a lot of the points you brought up. I understood why you were confused on her confession about feeling like a failure, I was a bit confused on that too, but I guess even the strongest personalities have their weak points. Great post!

  3. Madelyn, Mary Kay is a very interesting person and brilliant entrepreneur. I was impressed to read that she overcame so much professionally, as well as personal turmoil, in order to become the incredible success-story we know her by today. I share your confusion as well in that it is hard to imagine someone as successful as she was doubting her achievements.
